Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) SIBO is a condition where normal intestinal bacteria have invaded the small intestine. While they are normal inhabitants of the intestine, they are in the wrong place.

These bacteria like to take carbohydrates (sugar, starch, fiber) and ferment them. The gas they produce causes bloating, pain and also changes the motility of the intestine – making it too fast (diarrhea) or too slow (constipation).

This bacterial overgrowth also creates inflammation in the intestines that can lead to food sensitivities and nutrient malabsorption.

THE TEST

The SIBO test explores the microbiota and flora found from the mouth to the intestines by measuring 3 gases: hydrogen, methane and CO2. The test simply involves blowing into a balloon, which will detect if you are experiencing an imbalance in your microbiota.
